The operators, the company, and the public have great interest in safety due to concerns of public relations and customer well-being. This project pursues the creation of a physiological alertness feedback device or “smart” ear seals for astronauts, pilots, and heavy machine operators. This product will acquire the appropriate signals (BCG, ECG, EEG, navigation), process them, and give essential feedback through piezoelectric tactile vibrators. This augmented system is essentially comprised of three separate, but integrated concepts: (1) novel physiological monitoring and fatigue/alertness, mental workload, and heart rate variability calculation; (2) Navigation monitoring; and (3) feedback through piezo-electric tactile sensors.
